In an effort to celebrate diversity, the annual “Coming Together in Skokie” will move their focus westward as they recognize Greek culture from January to March.

Niles West and  Niles North students will participate in a variety of events in schools, libraries, and other community locations. Various speakers will present at Niles West, Niles North, Oakton Community College, and the Hellenic Museum.

“Through Greek Club here at Niles West, students will perform dances, skits, take place in a video, and model traditional attire,” Greek club sponsor Bill Papaioannou said. “Hellenic culture will be discussed in depth as we explore religion, cuisine, politics, art, literature, and much more. It has been a long journey, with lots of time and effort contributed by community members, parents, students, and teachers.”

Greek and non-Greek students alike are looking forward to these next few months and all that will follow.

“I am very excited because we are going to be learning a lot about our culture and civilizations,” sophomore Yianni Papasotiriou said.

“I think Greek culture is important to learn about, and it’s great that we have opportunities like ‘Coming Together in Skokie’ to learn about different cultures. Our school’s diversity is something we should be proud of,” junior Taylor Genis said.

The Opening Ceremonies will take place on Sunday, Jan. 27 in the Niles West auditorium. There will be music, food, and entertainment.
