National Day of Silence is organized to make a stand for LGBTQ youth who are subjected to name-calling and other forms of harassment. Today is a day for people to stand in solidarity.

Students at Niles West are participating in this day to show the community at our own school how much they care for one another.

“In order to achieve equality for all, you need to understand what it’s like to walk a mile in someone else’s shoes,” participating sophomore Zakira Langia wrote.

Students like Langia want to be able to show others that even though they may not know what people are going through, they are always here to stand up for them.

“We have a very supportive school and open community. I think it’s important to have days like this so people are able to see the community here, and sort of give a nod to those kids who feel like they can’t speak up on a day to day basis,” GSA co-sponsor Kelly Stallard said.

Others outside of the LGBTQ community are quick to show support.

“I think it’s important because it shows that people in the community are not alone and that there are others to stand with them and support them no matter what they’re going through,” supporting senior Danielle Harris said.

It’s not too late to participate in the Day of Silence, stop by the IRC during all periods to sign up and get your wristband.
