Reign: “Gossip Girl” of the Medieval Era

Reign%3A+Gossip+Girl+of+the+Medieval+Era

We all had those moments where we have just finished a show and feel empty inside, as if we have lost a piece ourselves.

After we’ve finished our ‘favorite show,’ we enter the grieving stage and can not get over the amount of time and dedication we put into the show we watched. The emotional attachment we made with the show and the connections we have made with the characters, makes us feel as if we were a part of that life. It is hard to get past the last show we have finished and eventually find a replacement.

Trust me, I have been there way too often. When I finished Gossip Girl and 90210, I never thought I could find a new show to love, but lucky for me, I discovered Reign.

Reign is definitely worth the watch despite the fact that it is historically inaccurate. The three-season show Reign on Netflix first aired in 2013, and it’s fourth season is airing on the CW this year. This show is quick to watch, easy to get attached to, and very hard to get over. You can think of Reign as the medieval version of Gossip Girl. This show is full of drama, romance, suspense, and most importantly, hot guys. Sadly, season three isn’t on Netflix yet, but when it is, you know where I’ll be.

Reign revolves around Queen of Scotland, Mary Stuart (Adelaide Kane) who travels to France to secure her wedding with the son of the King of France, Prince Francis (Toby Regbo), which was a strategic political engagement made when they were kids. When Mary arrives in France, she finds that her life, engagement, and country are threatened. She finds an ally in someone in the castle that she has never seen, although this guide has seen her. During all the experiences Mary has in the castle, she builds and readies herself to be a powerful queen of both France and Scotland. Throughout her journey, Mary has to find a balance between the needs of her heart and those of her country.

Season One was full of suspense and unrequited love. Mary liked Francis, but even in the medieval days, boys didn’t know what’s best for them, especially when its right in front of their face. Mary wanted to be loved so badly; she was in a convent her whole life waiting to marry this prince just to find out he isn’t feeling it, and she ends up falling for his half-brother (weird). The love triangles that happen in the first season are unexpected and keep you guessing who is for who.

Season Two is the definition of unexpected. ‘The Plague’ happens in this season, and it leaves you on the edge of your seat, wondering who will survive. The nobles go against the king and make the epidemic 10 times harder than it had to be. People were already dying from the plague, and they made it worse by not delivering the grain, which was honestly so selfish. Lord Condé (Sean Teale) and King Francis battle (literally and figuratively) for Mary’s love. Mary will honestly surprise you with the people she falls in love with and the things she does.

Reign shows you the difficulty of the life of a ruler, and will show you the things people will do to be with and protect the ones they love, even at the expense of losing everything. The love triangles in this show will keep you guessing who will end up with who, especially Lord Condé, who comes up in season two and made this show even better for the eyes to watch (hottie alert).

This show will keep you captivated through every episode, and will have you fascinated about what will happen next.
