The lights will shine bright as the boys varsity football team runs onto the field with pride, ready to take on their longtime rivals. Our Wolves will take on the Niles North Vikings at home this Friday, Oct. 7 at 7:00 p.m. 

Niles North had started off their season by trailing with five straight losses. West, on the other hand, has a record of 4-2 and have started the season off with a roar.

Junior Cody Gartner , a middle linebacker, is eager to show the Vikings up in this game.

“It’s probably the biggest game of the year because Niles North is our sister school and they are our biggest rivals,” Gartner said. “The game is on October seventh, and the number seven means a lot to me and my family. It’s the day when my brother and best friend, Zack Gartner had passed away. I play football because of him and dedicate my hard work and wins to him.”

From the fan side, senior Michael Youkhanna is excited to cheer on the players during this game.

“Not only is the game a big deal for the players, but the game is huge for the student section. It’s a battle of who’s louder and who has more school spirit,” Youkhana said. “I have tons of friends at North, and it’s basically  a battle of who has more bragging rights between the schools. Also, this year I see a different team led by my best friend Johnny Pabst, our quarterback.”  

Senior Johnny Pabst has recently been ranked number one in the state and 32nd in the whole country for total yards, although it won’t impact his play this Friday.

“I don’t feel any pressure or a need to go out there and get a bunch of yards to stay in that position. It’s very cool, but it shows more about our linemen and our receivers than it does about me,” Pabst said. “The line does a great job of blocking and giving me running lanes and the receivers are threats when they have the ball in their hands. I’m going to do what I’m asked and do what’s needed for us to win, and the yards may or may not come with it.”  

This game is crucial for the boys, because to even be considered for IHSA playoffs, five wins is necessary, and six wins is preferred. Make sure to come support your varsity boys in the stands this Friday.
