As winter is quickly approaching, the girls basketball season is getting back in full swing. The NWN had a chance to sit down with a couple players to discuss the upcoming season.

Sophomore point-guard and co-captain Sam Galanopoulos is looking forward to achieving team as well as individual goals .

“As a team, technical-wise we are focusing on doing the little things like boxing out and rebounding, because we will be the smallest team all year. Communicating is helpful too. Last year, for whatever reason, we never talked, especially on defense, and that affected us drastically,” Galanopoulos said. “Individually, my goals are to be a leading scorer, leading rebounder, and go down state for the three-point contest, of course after passing all of the regionals and sectionals.”

Junior guard and co-captain Tricia Pabst also believes communication plays a major role in a successful season.

This year, one of our biggest goals as a team is communication. We can be a very tough team to beat when we are all talking and having each other’s backs on the floor,” Pabst said. “We have lots of talent as individuals, so we need to work together to make it a team effort. Another part of our game that we will focus on this year is defense. We definitely won’t be the biggest team out there, so we are working on boxing out and being stronger defensively.”

Compared to last year, Galanopoulos believes that this team is much more developed.

“The team this year is already so much better. We have a genuine like for each and every one of each other, and the intensity is great. We come into practice and grind, we have leaders that are really pushing at everyone, and we are all on the same page,” Galanopoulos said.

With a new season comes new players and new talent, and the team plans to use this to their advantage.

I am looking forward to seeing where we can go with the rest of the season. We play in a tough conference that graduated a lot of really talented players, so we hope we can use that to our advantage. With many of the same girls on the team, there’s some new blood and potential and we know what we need to do to win this year,” Pabst said.

Come support your lady Wolves at their first home game on Tuesday, Nov. 29 at 7:00 p.m. as they take on the Glenbrook North Spartans.
