Girls Basketball Wins Season Opener Versus Hersey

Students filled the main gym last night for the Girls Basketball team’s season opener versus Hersey. To an outsider, it might have seemed odd that the bleachers would be filled with such exuberant fans on a Tuesday night. Don’t they have homework? Yes, but the hype surrounding the team is undeniable, mostly due to the star-power of senior Jewell Loyd, and boy, did they live up to it, as the Wolves defeated the the Hersey Huskies 49-32.

The team asserted dominance early in the game, with Loyd draining most of her shots, and senior Jackie Cardenas blocking an array of the Huskie’s attempts, jumping out to a 13-7 by the end of the first quarter.<

Towards the beginning of the second, Loyd started to take over the game, eventually outscoring the Huskies entire team, scoring 16 points in the first half; despite having some trouble making breakaway lay-ups, the Wolves led at halftime 30-14.

In the end, Loyd ended her night with 29 points, as the Wolves dictated the Huskies, 49-32.

Head coach Tony Konsewicz said he was pleased with his team’s performance.

“I thought we played great for our first game. We were defensively intense from start to finish, with a strong performance from Jewell (Loyd) and Jackie (Cardenas). We have some things to work on, but if this game is indicitive of the rest of the season, then we should be great this year,” he said.
