Varsity Girls Basketball played at the Mundelein Holiday Tournament over break and came out with a record of 1-3. The girls are excited to come back to the conference games and try their hardest to succeed.

Some games have been a struggle for the team these past couple of weeks, but sophomore Nicole Zelazko thinks this tournament is just what they needed to come back from break and play the best they can.

“Over break, we played in the Mundelein Christmas Tourney. Though we only came out with one win, I think playing the teams in the tournament helped us come back into our game. We’ve been having a rough couple of weeks playing against the highly skilled teams in our conference, such as New Trier. So I think playing a new handful of teams from outside the CSL really helped us put the game into a new perspective,” Zelazko said.

Regardless of the outcome of their games, coach Anthony Konsewicz is happy with how the girls play and how they will continue to grow and play together as a team.

“We always hope to get a victory, that being said we were proud the way the girls went out and competed in the tournament. What I am most proud of with my team is how hard they play and compete.  It doesn’t matter the score, whether we are winning or losing, I am proud how hard they play as a team,” Konsewicz said.

There are many exciting events coming up for the team before the season ends and the seniors say their final goodbyes to high school basketball.

“I’m looking forward to senior night because they decorate the gym all nice and there are posters with the seniors names on it. Senior night reflects on all 4 years of basketball and shows how far we’ve come,” captain Selma Sabovic said.

“The main thing I’m looking forward to is starting playoffs. Regionals always seem to be the most emotional time of the year because it gives everyone the now-or-never mindset. It’s the one time where anything could happen, and the surprises of underdog teams rising are always fun to look forward to. It is also emotional because at any given moment, it could be the last time playing with your teammates, especially seniors,” Zelazko said.

Playing on a varsity team is a lot of responsibility with great bonds between the whole team, and they wouldn’t want anything else and can’t wait to continue on with the season.

“Coaching this team is the highlight of my day.  I am extremely proud and feel fortunate to have the opportunity to work with such a great group of student athletes each day,” Konsewicz said.

“Though being younger puts another layer of pressure on performing, I would never take how much it has done for me and having the opportunity to play at that level for granted,” Zelazko said.
