There always seems to be that kid — the one who doesn’t have to pay attention in class or even study the material, but has no problem holding the highest grade in the class. Senior Steven Hristov has proved to us all that his nearly photogenic memory has helped him cruise his way through high school.

Although he’s considered one of the “Smartest Slackers” at Niles West, Hristov explained his strategies for maintaining a balanced school and social life.

“Personally, I don’t think I’m a slacker. It may appear to my friends that I learn things faster, but that doesn’t mean that I don’t do my work. I just manage to get my work done quicker so I can have a balanced school and social life,” Hristov said. “People might also have a false perception of me because I’m a goofy kid and I’m always hanging with my friends outside of school.”

Hristov’s friends often get to see his two very distinctive personalities: the one he has during class and the one he has once the bell rings.

“Steve is one of a kind guy — extremely intelligent, creative, and driven. He was voted the ‘Smartest Slacker’ of the grade, but when it matters, no one grinds like him,” senior Andy Simovic said. “Maybe his lack of common sense won him this title, but we wouldn’t want Steven any other way.”

When communicating with Hristov, you can automatically sense his rational thinking. No matter what the topic is, Hristov likes to think everything out with logic.

“Steven never stops talking about something new he’s learned,” senior Alen Radeljic said. “I don’t know anyone that can manage their time better than him. He always makes sure to get his work done so he can hang out with friends after school.”

Hristov is all about challenging himself for further improvement. Ever since freshman year, Hristov has been taking AP classes, with AP Chemistry being his favorite.

“I enjoy taking AP classes to further challenge myself, otherwise I’d be bored. Also, they get you ready for college and can even count as college credit,” Hristov said.

Hristov’s greatest mentor in life is his mom. He admits that she always stressed the importance of school without pressuring him.

“My mom has always stressed the importance of school, but she never put extra stress on me. She knows that I want to do good in school for myself, so she doesn’t have to worry for me,” Hristov said.

Hristov will continue his education at the University of Michigan, where he will be studying aerospace engineering or cardiology.

“My top three schools were the University of Michigan, Wisconsin, and Tulane. They’re all great schools with amazing campuses, but Michigan isn’t too far and it has great programs that foster my interests,” Hristov said.

Hristov is confident in his decision and is looking forward to the next four years as a Wolverine.

“I know that I’ll be able to maintain having fun and studying in college,” Hristov said. “I have self motivation to get my work done so I can have time for fun.”
