Financial Aid Night Rescheduled

Financial Aid Night Rescheduled

As a  result of Wednesday’s school closing, Financial Aid Night as been moved. College and career counselor Dan Gin,  in an e-mail, informed students of the changed date, writing;

” I am pleased to announce that we have confirmed, Tuesday, Jan. 20th, from 6:30 to 8 pm, as our NEW night for our District 219 Financial Aid Night, in the Niles NORTH auditorium.

As 2015 begins, Seniors across the U.S. are being reminded to begin the FAFSA application. Terms like, income tax, W-2, gross income, and 1040 form are being thrown at students and parents that may not fully understand them, so the Financial Aid Presentation Night will help clear up confusion. The NWN sat down with Gin to discuss the informative evening and general information about FAFSA.

NWN: What’s FAFSA ?

Gin: FAFSA is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.  To be eligible for financial aid (grants, loans, work study), this form must be submitted to the federal government.

NWN: If parents haven’t filed for taxes yet can they still fill out the application?

Gin: Yes, parents can use their 2013 tax return to submit. This will give the student an estimated Expected Family Contribution and will hold their place in line. However, once the 2014 tax return is complete, the parent(s) will need to go back to the FAFSA and update the information to get an accurate financial picture.

NWN: Should high-income families still apply for FAFSA?

Gin: Everyone should complete the FAFSA form.  Some college scholarships are linked to the FAFSA form and anyone who completes the FAFSA is eligible for a loan.  Also, if the parent loses their job, the student may be eligible for financial aid.

NWN: When should students finish FAFSA by?

Gin: The earlier the better. Some schools have priority filing dates. However, I recommend that the parents/students complete the form by Feb. 15. Last year, the State of Illinois ran out of money in Mid Feb.

NWN: Is FAFSA a one time thing?

Gin: Every year, the student needs to complete the FAFSA because financial situation changes.

NWN: What’s the College Financial Aid Night going to go over?

Gin: The presenter is going to go line by line through the FAFSA form.  This will give the student and parents an overview of how to complete the form and how financial aid works.

NWN: Who should attend the Financial Aid Night?

 Gin: All seniors and parents.

NWN: Where and what time is Financial Aid Night?

Gin: Tuesday, Jan. 20th, from 6:30 to 8 pm in the Niles NORTH auditorium.

NWN: Why should students and their family’s go to FAFSA night?

Gin: To learn how to fill out the FAFSA form correctly, and ask questions that may pertain to the individual student.
Further questions can be answered at financial aid night on the 20th.
