Conflict in the Middle East: The Palestine Perspective

Junior Fatima Farha reflecting on her junior year.

Junior Fatima Farha on the conflict between Palestine and Israel.

The conflict between Palestine and Israel is nothing new; it’s been going on for decades now. The conflict is deep, filled with so many aspects that an entire history book will be filled in the not so distant future in an attempt at understanding every facet of this horrific battle. In simple terms, it’s a war between two groups of people over the ownership of land.  To outsiders it can seem like a problem with a simple solution, but that’s far from true. While this land may be considered disputed territory, to me it’s all Palestine’s land, and the Israeli forces were the invaders.

While the dispute has many aspects to it, the underlying tension is that Israel is dictating Palestine. The way this is done is not only unfair, but also inhumane and immoral. Millions of innocent people have died from these useless bombs and brutal fighting. Politically, it’s complicated. Even though there have been so many attempts to resolve it, nothing ever works out, mostly because Israel insists on occupying land that isn’t theirs.

For a pro-Palestinian like me, the whole thing is horribly upsetting.  It doesn’t matter how much we protest and rally against the war, nothing ever really changes. The fighting doesn’t just affect the Palestinians living in Palestine, but the ones who live here in America too.  Here we are forced to endure the pain of family members getting hurt. There are several students here in Niles West who have family in Palestine, and every day they worry about what will happen to them. While this may seem as if I am simply talking about ethics and morals and not focusing on the bigger picture, lets consider just how much ethics and morals matter.

The Israeli forces would destroy homes, rape the women, and steal from the Palestinians.  The Palestinians were the victims; they were attacked by the Israeli troops and they gave up more lives than anyone else. Breana mentions suicide bombings by the Palestinians. I do not condone that; frankly, it would be quite foolish of me to say that the Palestinians have not contributed to the conflict, but that is what someone has to do when something that belongs to them is taken away. If the Israelis were merely fighting for self-defense, then why don’t the Palestinians have the right to do so as well?

Sophomore Isha Khalil and her younger sister, freshman Mariyam Khalil are from the small village of Battir, near Bethlehem.  The Khalils have relatives who were alive during the start of the war in 1948. According to their grandparents, it can only be described as horrific.

“My grandpa told me it was one of the hardest times of his life since there were no jobs, meaning no income. My mom said in a village not too far from ours, some women were even raped because they denied the Israelis go to into some rooms. They’d randomly arrest the men in the family, too. My mom once got an olive tree golden necklace from her mother, and when an Israeli had everyone evacuate the house he ripped it off of her neck, bit it so it bent and threw it down the mountains. She never saw it again,” Isha explained.

The Khalil family visited Palestine during the summer of 2011.  While they were there, they found themselves being treated with extreme disrespect from the Israeli police at the checkpoints. They were often asked suspicious questions and never treated with respect.  Neither Isha or Mariyam see the logic behind the dispute. While Breana points out that all the Arabs at Israel have equal rights and are rarely mistreated, that does not seem to be the case with Isha and Mariyam. And if the Israelis can treat American citizens in such a way, then how must they be to the Palestinians?

“It makes me sick. I can’t put into words how horrible it really is.  How the media can make us look like the bad guys?  How they’d make a big deal about a few Israeli deaths but never mention the hundreds of lives taken away in Gaza just recently? I’ve lost faith in humanity- honestly, how can people be so evil and cold?” Isha wondered.

Senior Seema Suleiman agrees with the Khalils and has had a similar experience.  Suleiman is from a village called Beit-Nabala, a Palestinian land currently occupied by Israel.  Suleiman used to live in Palestine and can attest to the suffering.

“When I lived in Palestine,  I had a gun pointed at me as I walking to school…I am always worrying about my family that are still living in Palestine. I worry that their house might get destroyed or that someone might get killed,” Suleiman said.

According to Suleiman, the Palestinians should fight and are fighting for a justified cause against the Israelis. Palestinians are being forced to leave their homes and live in an enclosed territory with borders set by the Israeli government, and the Palestinians have every right to fight for their homes back. Many argue that the Palestinians should not be fighting back if they do not want to get killed, but it is their land, so they must fight. Think about it, if your home was taken away, would you sit back and let it happen?  To me, not fighting back isn’t even an option.

Breana claims that the Palestinians were simply borrowing the land, and when Israel took it, they had the complete right to it. No, the Palestinians were not “borrowing” land. They had ownership to it. The Zionists took it when they couldn’t find a place anywhere else. If they were accepted elsewhere, they would have just stayed there and invaded that land.

Somehow, the United States actually supports Israel and its troops. While the people are being bombed in Palestine, America is providing Israel with the money and weapons to make that possible. The fact that the U.S. actually supports the Israeli government disgusts most Palestinians, including the Khalils, Suleiman, and myself.

“I absolutely hate, hate, hate the fact that the U.S. supports Israel. They are basically supporting terrorism,” Mariyam said angrily.

Suleiman agrees with her, “Israel gets weapons from the U.S. while the Palestinians fight with whatever weapons they have and with rocks. It is not U.S. business to get into other countries problems.”

In Nov. 2012, Israel bombed the Gaza strip… again. Even if Breana tries to argue that both Palestinians and Israelis are affected by this conflict in the same way, then they are just ignoring the statistics. In that bombing itself, the Palestinian casualties were over a 100, along with 850 injured. Israelis only reported three civilians dead and 60 people wounded. Where is the justice?

If the Israelis keep controlling the Palestinians, there will be no justice. There are no justifications for what the Israeli government is doing. No, it is not a two sided conflict. If it was, then there would be some sort of a similarity among the casualties that both sides have suffered. However, if you compare the statistics that I have provided, then you will see that next to Palestine’s casualties, Israel’s seem like none. The Palestinian army is also greatly outnumbered against the Israelis; a war is fought between two nations with at least some similarity between their statuses in the military. Breana’s article insists that the conflict will end when Palestine stops fighting. However, I can honestly say that will not happen. If the Palestinians put down their guns, then the Israeli government would just subjugate them under even more intense control. Saying that when the minority group stops fighting, the dominant one will too is absolutely ridiculous.

Yes, a life lost is a life lost and it is tragic, but in terms of the whole picture, Palestine is greatly outnumbered and suffering to the extreme. There will be no justice if Israel isn’t stopped, and even if we can’t stop them completely, we can try. It irritates me how this issue is overlooked by the media and by a majority of Americans, but it is occurring and it is hurting. The least we can do is pay a bit of attention to it, and one day Palestinians will gain back their land and their true rights.

The media influences a lot of judgement that may or may not be true. In order to understand exactly how the Israeli occupation is affecting Palestine, it is necessary to hear from the Palestinians themselves. In history it has always been common for the winners’ side to depict the story. Naturally, the media will depict the story from an Israeli Zionist’s perspective. But that is like listening to the Native Americans’ story from Christopher Columbus. While Israel has advanced very far and has many accomplishments to credit it as a successful nation, there is no reason as to why it should continue to keep the Palestinians in an apartheid; there will be nothing wrong if Palestine is given back its true land.

Its a great article, it shows the TRUE side of a Palestinians perspective of this issue. I’m pretty sure not all of you that have commented have ever been to Israel or Palestine. I don’t think you’d be in the same state of mind that you are right now if you go spend a weekend in Palestine. Palestinians won’t just move on and say “ok well Israel has been here long enough let them be”. Yeah, ISRAELI soldiers did rape women, no where in the article did it say that other groups of people didn’t. Don’t use the media as your only source of information or else you’re getting the entirely wrong idea of what’s really going on.

Israeli soldiers don’t rape palestinians because they are racist toward them. This is a proven fact. This racism is fueled by hateful acts of terror performed by the extremist Palestinians.

Where are Israelis supposed to go? The Palestinians have 56 accommodating muslim countries while Jews only have 1, Israel.

Also, way to use anecdotal evidence. Just because a few Israelies were jerks who raped some Palestinian women doesn’t mean the nation loses it’s “right to exist”.

It wasn’t even their land, it was Englands. They offered SOME of this, less than 20%, to the Jews as a state to protect them. The majority of the land was promised to Palestinians but they refused to accept less than 100%, so they waged war and guess what? Israelis won! They lost the land that they could have had and then some that wasnt theirs to begin with! Sucks! Native Americans lived here before European settlers, does that mean the US doesn’t have the right to exist? Time moves on. These people have already been living there 70 years. They have as much, if not more, right to the land as the Palestinians.

I’m a Palestinian who grew up in Palestine. There was much violence and death, so my family moved to Tel Aviv, we were treated with so much compassion and generosity by the Israelis. My mother was not struck by other males or forced to cover her entire body in Tel Aviv. My mother removed the covering of her face, I could see the bruises. She smiled, I had never seen my mother smile before, we were free at last. We feel love towards Israel and so should Palestinians in America.

Your family must have been lucky because most Palestinian families couldn’t even get a pass to go visit Jerusalem to visit the Dome Of The Rock let alone move to Tel Aviv. Also, it’s against Islam to force anything (such as marriage or wearing the hijab).

You say there will be justice when Palestinians regain control of Israeli land. Riddle me this Fatima, How can there be justice when ‘Palestine’ lacks a government and the ability to conduct foreign relations with other states?

I had to stop reading when you said Israeli soldiers raped palestinians. That is a complete and utter fallacy. Israeli soldiers do not rape women because they’re moral. Any raping that happened was performed by other Arab forces. I read a news article that said Gaddafi was giving his soldiers Viagra so they could systematically rape women. You can say Israel Terrorizes all you want, it’s just a false opinion, but once you start lying to the reader, I’m done.

This has nothing to do with Gaddafi and what he did. As a Palestinian I can truthfully say there have been rapes from Israeli soldiers. Now I’d be lying if I said all Israeli’s were like this because some of them came from Yemen and Morocco (yes there are Jewish Arab), spoke Arabic, and communicated with the Palestinians. Watch 5 Broken Cameras and see the truth behind it. Israeli’s building settlements on Palestinian land full of olive trees. Is that fair? Israeli soldiers not only raped women but also beat grandparents, imprisoned brothers for no reason and killed brothers.

If raping or any other of these malicious acts from Israeli soldiers have happened, they are all isolated incidents. Very rarely do you see things like this happening from Israeli soldiers, and just because there’s a few sick and messed up ones out there doesn’t mean that the Israeli forces as a whole are like that. As an Israeli I have met Israeli soldiers in the past and know what kinds of people they are, and they are definitely not the way you are describing them.

I absolutely agree with this article. Sitting here in the US, the general public has no idea of the Palestinian perspective unless they are of that descent or have friends. A large mass of the US public is swayed by the media that highly praises Israel and the so called ‘troubles’ Israel has to deal with. The public fails to realize there is always two sides to a story. Media sways people to people that oh Palestinians = Muslim = terrorists = always at fault. But the situation in Palestine is not about being Muslim, it is crimes against humanity. There are countless videos on YouTube show casing the terrors of day to day life innocent civilians in Palestine face. There’s a very great documentary called Occupation 101 that displays the fear Palestinians have about the future and that living another day is never certain. I really wish people would move away from their ignorance about this topic and stop supporting Israel without knowing the entire story. Perhaps if people would do some research rather than blindly believing what media depicts and actually try to understand the other side of the story, the Palestinian plight will be heard and they will be rescued from oppression.

“While this land may be considered disputed territory, to me it’s all Palestine’s land, and the Israeli forces were the invaders.” There’s a huge argument over whom the land belonged to first. I’ll say this: the Native Americans were brutally slaughtered and their land was taken by the country we live in now. How come we’re not calling for the USA to be given back to them? Israel took a tiny part of the Middle East in comparison to what the US took. “’I absolutely hate, hate, hate the fact that the U.S. supports Israel. They are basically supporting terrorism’” That is utterly ridiculous. The US supports Israel because they’re the only democracy in the middle east. She says that Israel carries out terrorism? It’s the exact opposite. It’s Hamas, which oddly was not mentioned in this article at all, that is the terrorist. They are the ones firing missiles onto Israel, or carrying out suicide bombings. Israel specifically says that if ONE bomb is fired on them, they will respond by bombing the Palestinians much, much harder. Does Hamas care? No. They don’t care about the lives of the Palestinians. Otherwise, they wouldn’t be firing those missiles. Israel doesn’t have a choice but to fire back as a result. Also, the casualty numbers are way, way out of context. Gaza is the most populated area per square foot in the world. Hamas intentionally hides their weapons and leaders in homes of families with women and children to make Israel look bad. Israel has to kill some innocent people in order to kill the actual terrorists. And as a result they kill a lot more Palestinians than the amount of Israelis killed. Haven’t you ever seen cases in which children are literally used as shields so that Israel will not shoot? Israel is no saint by any means. I believe that they should actually give back the West Bank and allow the Palestinians to live there. I do have sympathy for the Palestinians, it’s hard to live like that, and the examples you cited are entirely true and it would be hard for anyone not to sympathize with that. But this article in general is extremely one-sided and blames everything on Israel, which is not at all the case. Israel is put in a tough position, and the conflict isn’t as one-sided as this article makes it out to be.

I liked how this one has opinions from first-hand witnesses and it just not 100% babble but it is like 90% babble.

When writing a column with your opinion, I’d like to know how you’ve come to form your opinion i,e; do you have statistics or facts that showed to a side to this argument? Do you have a personal connection, or the ethos, for it? The counter argument to this held no facts and I wished both parties could have given me something to work with.
