Peace Love Chic: The “Perfect” Selfie

Peace+Love+Chic%3A+The+Perfect+Selfie

This post is part of NWN’s beauty blog, Peace Love Chic.

Imagine taking a hundred selfies, and not liking any of them. It happens to everyone, but there are definitely things that can be done to help you out. Certain alterations will make a huge difference in the pictures. Keep in mind: lighting and angles are everything.

Facing right in front of any light will offer the best lighting possible. There won’t be shadows cast over your face, and it won’t be a low resolution picture, which would all happen due to a lack of lighting. Surprisingly, bathrooms have really good lighting — a lot better than most bedrooms. Try to avoid the toilet in the picture though, because that’s not going to add style to your selfie. Also, natural light outside or through a window is really helpful and flattering.

Angles can make or break a picture. Depending on where the camera is held, it could look like you have three chins, or a slender chin. The higher the camera is held, the thinner you look. Make sure it isn’t overly high though because that’ll look weird too. If you hold the camera below your chin, it is NOT a flattering angle, and looks the worst.

Smiling should not be forced. It’ll be obvious and not look as good because it’s not natural or smooth. Don’t force your smile, either. Sometimes it won’t be on your side, but that’s okay. Everyone is guilty of “mean mugging,” or “duck-lips,” so those are always available, too.

Basically, whatever your favorite pose, outfit, makeup, look, and whatever else goes into selfies is what’s going to look best, and what’s going to end up being your favorite pictures.

Don’t try to be/do something that isn’t you. Do what comes natural to you, not what the “social norm” is, because in the end you’ll like that the best. Selfies are meant to be fun and you’re supposed to like them, so do whatever you want to do, and you’ll absolutely be happier in the end.
